The name John is Hebrew in origin. It means "God's grace." John is the name of the longest-lived of Christ's apostles, the apostle who was especially loved by Christ. It is also the name of the one who baptized Christ, John the Baptist. There are many variations of the name. Jan is its Dutch and Slavic form. The German and Swiss variant is Johan.

Do you believe in God? There are some believers of God who don't believe in saints. These are other religions that believe in God but don't believe in saints. I won't mention them anymore out of respect. Anyway, if you're a Roman Catholic, I'm sure you believe in saints. In fact, most probably, your mother has a patron saint. Who's your patron saint?

Jude is a variant name for Judas (not that traitor of Jesus, if you're thinking of him). And, Judas comes from the Hebrew name, Yehudah, which means "praised." Judah is among the Jacob's 12 sons. The tribe that led the Exodus or the escape of people from Egypt comes from the tribe of Judah (Old Testament). Among the descendents of Judah are Jesus and King David. Jude is also the name of one martyr, St. Jude Thaddeus, who annointed Christ after His death.

St. Jude Thaddeus has been my patron saint since college. He's the patron saint of the hopeless with regards to money, study, love life, and other dreams. I've already proven St. Jude Thaddeus' miracle when he granted my three wishes. These are: passing my Mathematics subject in college (what can I do? I'm not good at numbers!), filling up my piggy bank to overflowing, and meeting someone with whom I would like to spend the rest of my life.

John is a Hebrew name which means that God is merciful. Due to its origin the name had been associated with Holy people. In the Bible, There was John, the Jewish prophet and apostle. He was considered by most Christians as the predecessor of the son of God. He was the one who baptized Jesus Christ, therefore granting him the "the Baptist" moniker. Another is the late Karol Jozef Wojtyla, as the Holy Father; Pope John Paul II since his election to the papacy. The cardinals elected him Pope at the Conclave on October 16, 1978. His pontificate in Vatican City is among the longest in Catholic Church history which lasted nearly 27 years.
But aside from holy figures, John also is a popular name to our much loved celebritie. Born on October 9, 1940, the legendary John Winston Ono Lennon was best known as a singer, composer, author, and guitarist of the 60's rock and roll band The Beatles. His music, especially the song Imagine, is still a favorite up to now. Fans mourned on his death last December 8 1980. Hailed by Mark David Chapman, a fan who shot him five times with a .38 revolver.
Award-winning actor John Travolta, born last February 18, 1954 in New Jersey gained fame as Vinnie Barbarino on the TV series "Welcome Back, Kotter" (1975). As a movie star, he was known for his films such as the musical Grease, Swordfish, Austin Powers in Goldmember, The Thin Red line, The Punisher, and Ladder 49. The bible is among the most popular sources of baby names. This does not come as a surprise at all since the entire holy book narrates a long list of exemplary characters whose lives centralized on one goal - the fulfillment of God's will. As such, we have names such as Noah, Judith, David, Ruth, Jeremiah, and Mary among others.
Yet, names or rather the change of names also signified a more profound purpose and meaning in many biblical stories. Have you ever wondered why some biblical characters were given a new name in place of their former name? A change of name primarily symbolized the total renewal of a person's life in order to assume the mission, which handed to him by God. As such, we recall popular switches such as Simon to Peter or Abram to Abraham.
Abram or Abraham was the first biblical character to undergo this transformation. He was born in the Ur in the valley between Tigris and Euphrates. However, Abram along with his wife and family was called by God from his land in order travel to a far away region where he would father God's people. His name including that of his wife was changed from Abram to Abraham symbolizing God's new covenant with him. For his obedience to God's will highlighted in his sacrifice of Isaac, Abraham has been called as the Father of Nations and a Man of Faith.

Characters from the Bible are often used in naming new-born children. One of the names derived from the Bible that has been used to name baby boys is the name of a prophet - Jeremiah. Jeremiah is one of several Major Prophets in the Bible and is the author of the Book Jeremiah, obviously, and Lamentations. He is also the one responsible for compiling and composing the histories of I and II Kings. Jeremy and Jerry are the western, and most popular, variants for Jeremiah.
It is said that he received a calling from God at a young age. Jeremiah is popularly known as the broken-hearted prophet, because the people of Judah did not listen to his prophecies. God knew this and warned Jeremiah that the people will not heed his words. According to the Bible, Jeremiah was warned by the Lord that that Babylonians would come and destroy the city of Jerusalem.
Angered by his words, the princes threw Jeremiah in jail and was confined when his prophecy came to pass. King Nebuchadnezzar released him and showed him kindness and allowed him to choose where he wanted to live. The name Jeremiah is actually of Hebrew origin which means "exalted by the Lord."

I am talking about the Christian god. In the Old Testament, God stated that His name is Yahweh. Most people today think that Yahweh is the proper name of God, but scholars disagree. They say that Yahweh is a third person form of the Hebrew "haya" meaning "to be." As the third person form of the verb haya, Yahweh means “He exists” which is more of a description for an omnipotent being than a name.
Many believe the Yahweh is not God’s real name, because Yahweh is a Hebrew word and God pre-existed humanity. God only said that His name is “Yahweh” because he was talking to Hebrews, but if He was talking to an English speaking race He would, most likely, address Himself as "I am." Since the Hebrew haya and the English I am is basically the same, it’s not impossible right? God would not reveal Himself in a language not understood by the Hebrews. So the more you think about it, the more it makes sense: Yahweh is not God’s first name but rather a description about Himself and His nature – that "He is."

I was playing Castlevania, a popular game in the PlayStation, and one of the boss enemies in the game was a vampire named Joachim. I found that name to be very appealing. I don’t know why but there’s that name projected mystery and greatness. Since then, I used the name in some of the stories I’ve composed. I think it’s a great name to give your baby boy. It’s uncommon so I’m sure that the name will stick in many the minds of those who encounter a person who bears the name Joachim. Some people pronounce that name as WAH-KEEM, but my friend who has that name pronounces his as JO-WA-KEEM. The names Akim and Joaquin are a variant form of this name.
Joachim is the name of the husband of Saint Anne and the father of the Blessed Virgin Mary, making him the grandfather of Jesus Christ. Although his name is in historical writings, Catholic tradition says that he gave Mary to the service of the church when she was three years old. When he was away from home, both he and his wife received a message from an angel that Mary was pregnant.

Believers of Christ or the so called Christians, when they pray, always mention the name Jesus. HE is their LORD and Saviour God or Redeemer. HE forgives the sinners and is merciful to those who humbly accept their wrongdoings and heartfully ask to be accepted in HIS bosom. But, like any other religions in the world, Jesus is just the name given to a God. So, what's so special in the name Jesus that the Kings of Kings, Almighty God and Lamb of God is baptised with it?
According to the Bible, the New Testament to be exact, Jesus is the only begotten son of the LORD and was conceived by the virgin Mary. The story of his existence on earth is delicately elaborated in the Books of Mathew, Luke, John, and Mark where HE worked miracles. The Christian religion spread in the continent of Asia, so as the translation of the Books in other tongues. Hebrews claim that the name mean 'God will help'. In ancient Rome, Greece and other Latin speaking countries, the name actually spelt as 'Iesous' which is a transliteration for the Hebrew 'Jeshua', 'Joshua' or 'Jehoshua' which means 'Yahweh is salvation.'

A name is unique for every individual. Before naming your child you must think of your choices first. You can choose from the biblical names if you are a religious person. Perhaps, the best source for names is the Bible because it has long lists of names with different meanings. But, before using a biblical name you must consider the sound of it. Some names in the Bible have great meanings but sound unpleasant. For instance the name Absalom which means "father of peace." The meaning behind the name is good but the sound of the given name is nice.
As a parent, you would not want your son to be the subject of humiliation when he grows up. And he would put the blame on you when that time comes. When people ask his name, they will not also ask for the meaning that is why you need to think and choose carefully. It is better for you to pick a name that gives a nice meaning and sound as well. Further, it must also be unique but not weird. Do not name him with the common names.
There are also instances wherein other people change their names when they grow up because they are not happy with it.

A name is very important for a person because it is his personal identity. This is considered the sweetest endearment to an individual. Through your name you become unique. But this is also hard for parents especially if they do not have an idea on what kind of name they are going to call their children. Some parents use the names of their favorite foreign celebrities. Others use the names of their most admired characters in the movies or books and popular singers. But the most popular source of list of names is the bible. Most parents today still use the bible as their basis on choosing the names of their children. There are those who believe that if they name their children with the biblical names, they will grow up God fearing and law abiding, that is not yet proven though.
Obviously, if they are named as Joseph, it is biblic because it is the name of the father of Jesus Christ. Adam is a Hebrew word which means, Man of the Earth. If the name of your child is Michael, this entails "Who is like God," also a Hebrew word. Strong is the meaning of Ethan who was once belonged to the warriors of David. If your son is not tall he might hate to be called Paul because that name is defined as "little or small." If you will call him such name his height will be further emphasized. Nathan on the one hand is a great name because it means God's gift. Aside from these there are various lists of biblical names with different meanings that every couple could use to name their children.

Most of us would not admit it outright, but we just love to contract names. It is kind of funny, when you think about it, because when we are in the hospital and the nurse is asking for a name for our newly-born baby, we usually come up with really nice and fancy names. Some parents even have the audacity to list their kid with three names, as if one name like Emmanuel is not long enough. Once they are taken home, these babies are called with whatever the people in the house or their nannies feel like, so something like Emmanuel becomes Em, which then is carried on by the boy into his adult years.
The same thing could be said of the name Nathaniel and Nathan. Personally, both of these names really are appealing because of three main reasons. The first one is that both names sound ancient, but has a contemporary ring to it. This could be due to the second reason which is rooted in the fact that both names have biblical origins. In Hebrew, Nathan is spelled as Natan, which refers to prophet and literally stands for 'he gave'. Nathaniel, on the other hand, is spelled as Natanel and is considered as the name bestowed on the brother of King David. Natanel also denote 'God given.' Lastly, Nathaniel is also the name of one of my favorite authors, whose book has been made into a popular movie.

Gabriel is the most recognized among the angels in the Holy Book. Gabriel one of the four archangels in heaven serving as the messenger of God, and is sometimes regarded as the angel of death.
Several other religions have their own depiction of Gabriel. In Islam, he is the angel responsible for revealing the Qur'an to the prophet Mohammed and is considered as the angel of truth. In Judaism, Gabriel is depicted weilding a sharpened scythe - contributing to his identity the angel of death. Even in occult beliefs, Gabriel is placed almost next to God as he is believed to be the chief angelic prince and ruler of the first heaven.

John is the name of several Biblical figures. Saint John the Evanglist, the one who baptised Christ and his disciples , and John the Apostle, who was said to be the apostle beloved to Christ, to name a few. The name John is also given to the head of the Catholic church, the Pope.
It is also the name given to an unidentified male individual, John Doe. Although the name has a somewhat holy legacy behind it, John also has a negative connotation as it is the slang for a man who hires a prostiture for sexual favors.

There are many very masculine names out there, but I think there is one name that highly fits into the bill. Adam, which generally means red or man, is derived from its Hebrew or Assyrian origin and one which I think is suited for naming first born boys.
Why? Because, according to the book of Genesis, Adam also is the name of the first, authentic man God created on earth, which is the reason for making it a biblical name. Aside from that, a couple of saints in the 13th century also bore the name.

Although Jericho is commonly given to males nowadays, in the 1990's it is uncommon for a boy to have that name. It may be because the origin of the name "Jericho" wasn't derived from a male historical figure but from that of a city.
In book of Joshua in the Old Testament, Jericho, which is Arabic for "City of Moon", was the city surrounded by a great wall. According to the Holy Book, on the seventh day that the Israelites had Jericho under siege, the great wall fell flat on the ground when the priests blew the trumpets and the people shouted.

When we speak of Hebrew names, we can easily tell that the name has more or less some biblical basis. Take for instance, Abraham, Aaron and Asher. Abraham or Avraham is one the main characters in the Bible and is called the father of the Jewish people.
Aaron or Aharon is another dominant figure who is the older brother of Moshe, a prophet.
Asher, on the other hand, is Jacob's son. There are also other not-so-popular Hebrew names that are featured in the Bible like Avishai (Jesse's grandson) and Aryeh (Army officer or "lion").

The name Paul is a world famous name. In almost all countries, there are always thousands of Paul. So, who's the original Paul? Paul or Saint Paul is also called Saul of Tarsus; he was one of the few, early leaders of the Christian Church. In the Roman Catholic and the eastern Orthodox churches, Paul is considered a saint. Also, Paul of Thebes was the first Christian hermit. Of course, in many other languages, the name Paul has corresponding meanings.

We hear the name Joshua everywhere, but who was Joshua according to the Bible? Joshua became a leader in Isreal after Moses and he is taken to be the author of the Bible's Old Testament chapter, Joshua. Joshua led Israel to God, he defeated and led a victorious war against 31 kings and armies. Joshua fought wars for almost 7 years. He died at the age of 110, and he was buried at Ephraim, Israel. Joshua is a really good name to give your baby boy, because he signified loyalty, goodness and bravery.
